On behalf of Obton, we are seeking a Grid Connection Manager to be a part of the Energy Storage & Power Portfolio Management team. As a newly established position, this role presents a unique opportunity for the ideal candidate to directly influence its direction and impact through their expertise and contributions.

As the Grid Connection Manager in Germany, you will be responsible for ensuring that grid connections required by Obton’s Storage Systems (BESS) and Photovoltaic (PV) projects are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner, in accordance with the technical specifications of the DNO/DSOs and applicable law.

Specific Work Tasks:

  • Provide technical assistance during project development and ensure factors influencing and influenced by the grid connection are considered.
  • Conduct grid screening as part of project origination, particularly for BESS.
  • Perform technical due diligence and risk assessment on grid connection schemes/grid offers received from TSO/DNO.
  • Manage Technical Advisors and Consultants to support grid and delivery-related activities in Germany and be a sparring partner for similar activities in Denmark.
  • Provide cost estimates and grid connection delivery timescales to business development teams.
  • Manage and be responsible for the process of grid applications, ensuring they are submitted in a timely manner and progress through the DNO/TSO processes without delay.
  • Maintain relationships with DNO/TSO to support the grid application and delivery process for the company’s projects in the country of operation.
  • Maintain relationships with HV/MV contractors and EPCs to drive performance and ensure they deliver their services to Obton’s standards.
  • Review technical designs submitted by HV/MV contractors or EPCs to ensure they meet Obton’s requirements and achieve cost efficiency without compromising quality.
  • Be responsible for “grid intelligence” and implementation of new connection methods arising from DNO/TSO policy changes and changing industry standards.
  • Negotiate and develop grid connection designs that reduce installation time and cost while maintaining or improving plant performance.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of the plants by providing grid expertise to the Asset Manager & O&M team managers throughout the life of the plants.

The position can be based in Obton’s German offices in Hamburg, Berlin or Gelsenkirchen, with the possibility of working from home 1-2 days per week.

Experienced Grid Connection Manager

The ideal candidate has a master’s degree in electrical engineering and a minimum of three years of experience with grid connection. This includes strong technical knowledge of HV (60-380kV) and MV (20-30kV) connection work in Germany, requirements for grid code compliance, TSO/DNO connection procedures, and administrative authorizations required for connection of renewable (including BESS) plants in the German market. Knowledge of the transmission grid operations in Germany and HV/MV substation and circuit design and construction standards is essential. Experience within the solar or battery industry is a clear advantage but not a requirement. Fluency in both English and German is required.

An Independent and Proactive Team Player

The ideal candidate can combine technical know-how with negotiation skills to achieve optimal results in a complex and dynamic environment. On a personal level, the candidate should naturally embody independence, proactivity, and a solution-oriented mindset. Furthermore, the Grid Connection Manager should be thorough, detail-oriented, and patient, knowing how to navigate the complexities of securing grid connections in Germany.
